Tips for New Skaters and Parents

TAKING
CARE OF YOUR SKATES:

  • Skates should be sharpened approximately after 20 hours of skating or at least once every 2 months.
  • Skates should be sharpened by a recognized figure skate sharpener.
  • In most cases the type of sharpening that should be done is called a combination sharpening. This type of sharpening is acceptable for all disciplines of skating.
  • There are other specialized sharpenings that may be used as well. (Freestyle, dance & figure{?})
  • Please note you should always sharpen your skates no later than 1 week before any competition, carnival or test day.
  • Rubber skate guards should always be used when you are walking on your skates off of the ice surface. These guards should never be left on your skates for extended periods of time. This will cause your blades to rust and this will ruin your sharpening.
  • After you have finished skating always thoroughly dry your blades and boots with a soft absorbent cloth or a chamois.
  • When storing your skates always use cloth skate guards to help prevent your blades from rusting.
  • Never leave your skates in a locker or a bag. This will not allow the skates to dry properly and will cause the boot to become moldy and/or break down very quickly. Instead always bring your skates home take them out of the bag and let them dry at room temperature.

CHOOSING A PAIR OF SKATES:

  • Since skates are your primary and most important piece of equipment, it is very important to get a suitable pair to allow you to perform your best.
  • A good pair of used skates will always be a better investment than a pair of poor quality new ones.
  • A poor quality skate will not have enough support in the ankles, will have a blade which is difficult to perform many skating maneuvers on, and will not allow your child to progress quickly in this sport.
  • It is a wise choice to spend more on your skates than to spend on your skating outfit.
  • Some of the better skate company names to look for are Harlick, Wifa, SP-Teri, Riedell, Gam, Risport

Please go to a recognized figure skate dealer to aid in your choice of skates. Hardware stores and Department stores do not generally carry the level of skate required to learn quickly and properly on.

PROBLEMS WITH SKATES:

  • Please note that if you have any problems with your skates there most likely is a simple solution to correct it.
  • For example if your ankles are sore a boot may be molded out so that your ankles are not sore any more. Other minor points of discomfort are usually easily fixed.
  • For any problems big or small The Leading Edge Skate Shop will be there to help you solve them.

Some of our services include sharpening, boot stretching, rebuilding, hook repairs, blade alignment and more.
